The network is based in Rugby and has 61 members, says Mick Dewhurst, regional manager for the Midlands and NorthWest. "By the end of this year were looking at having 65 licensees," he adds.

When Fortec seeks new blood it does not advertise; instead, it relies on referrals from established members. "Our licensees have different skills, some with parcels, some with haulage, and others have set out their stalls to be part of a pallet network," says Dewhurst.

Sound cash flow is a prerequisite to joining. "Financial stability must be proven before joining the network, as well as commercial awareness and sales," he says.

Existing businesses are expected to show a willingness to develop their pallet arms, and Dewhurst points out that Fortec regional managers are on hand to assist.

"The idea of regionalising the structure is so we can help at a local level," he says.

Members are spread across England, Scotland and Wales, and there are also branches in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The network prides itself on quality, rather than quantity, but what exactly does this mean?

Dewhurst says that next-day delivery means just that — pallets are guaranteed to beat their destination.

To achieve this, solid communication is needed across all parties to ensure there is a smooth flow of pallets.

He adds that Geod is, the French logistics company that owns Fortec, also takes pallets to the Continent.
