• Euro MPs plan to table an emergency resolution highlighting the problem of truck drivers and other EU nationals jailed outside their own counties.
The move comes as Lancashire truck driver John Harrower prepares to take his case to trial at Bayonne in south-west France. Harrower has spent the past year in prison in Bayonne on remand after customs officers allegedly found cannabis on his truck. He insists he is innocent.
The MEPs resolution at the European Parliament in Strasbourg will publicise the lack of harmonisation in EU members' legal systems—but harmonisation could take 10 years.
