• Hauliers have been hit hard in Northern Ireland's latest bout of street violence with around 100 trucks and vans damaged by rioters throughout the province.
In scenes that recalled the earliest days of the conflict, rioters have caused around .£1m of damage after hijacking and setting fire to vehicles.
One driver was hospitalised after hijackers poured petrol down his throat after threatening to set him on fire.
After almost a week of rioting following the release from prison of British Army private Lee Clegg, the Royal Ulster Constabulary was this week unable to offer truck drivers any advice. "There's no real way to safeguard your inter
ests," the RUC admits. "If six masked gunmen are standing in front of your vehicle, what can you do?"
Dukes Transport this week has declined to comment on reports that one of its vehicles has been attacked. The Northern Ireland Office's Compensation Agency has already sent out engineers to begin to assess the influx of claims: private insurers do not pay out for acts of terrorism on trucks.
