Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Gulf War technology is set to give drivers perfect night-time vision within two years and for less than £1,000 per truck, Ford subsidiary Jaguar says.

It is close to perfecting an infra-red system that will project a daylight-like image of the road ahead on the inside of truck and car drivers' windscreens. The image is so clear that drivers can easily drive at night without headlights.

Jaguar is part of a consortium of manufacturers called Prometheus which is working on ways to bring the cost of this expensive military technology down to the sort of price road users will bear.

They are resting their hopes on cheaper Near Infra Red sys tems, which flood the road with infra red light and view it with a camera.

More expensive thermal Imaging systems give better visibility and detect pedestrians more effectively, but need special cooling devices to work.
