Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Royal Mail has begun a six-month trial of a Volkswagen Golf Ecomatic van in London and Wolverhampton. Fuel consumption and emissions figures will be compared with those of a conventional Golf van.

The 1.9-litre diesel-powered Ecomatic incorporates a control system that automatically switches the engine off when stationary or coasting; it starts again as soon as the driver presses the accelerator. This is said to cut fuel consumption by around 20% in stop-start dri ving the saloon's official urban cycle fuel consumption figure is 61.4mpg.

CM found that the system was easy to adapt to, particularly as it comes with an excellent clutchless manual gearbox (4-10 August 1994).
