• Worcestershire-based Turner Fain Group is the third company to join Commercial MoloriLeyland Dafs Runnerthon, putting the 8.15 Roadrunner on the road for a fortnight delivering its curtain walling, windows, doors and shopfronts all over the country.
The vehicle has now been fitted with a Brade Leigh dropside body and has been hard at work moving both the manufacturer's finished products and component sections to building sites nationwide.
"We have kept the Roadrunner very busy," says Turner Fain transport manager Trevor Warman. "It has been a useful exercise for the company because we operate a fleet of vehicles required to cope with differing load factors."
The company's transport operation is not, of necessity, its main preoccupation, It runs a small fleet of four 7.5-tonne vehicles — two Bedfords and two Leyland Dafs — with a smaller Renault and a Leyland Daf Sherpa. The vehicles each cover some 70,000km a year.
AT THE HELM
Turner Fain was established at its Droitwich base over 20 years ago and its founders, Messrs Turner, Fain and Houlton, are still at the helm today.
In the intervening years it has built up a reputation in the industry for high-quality, high-performance products and has recently gained the British Standards Institute Quality Assurance BS5750.
Much of its work is for government departments, and the company has been a Property Services Agency Method of Building-approved sub-contractor since 1977, says Warman.
At the moment Turner Fain is under
taking contracts for the Department of the Environment, both at home and overseas, including the replacement of 8,000 windows at the Department of Transport's Marsham Street, London headquarters. The little Cummins-powered 7.5-tonner certanly hasn't been standing still snce it joined Turner Fain.
"We haven't seen much of the Roadrunner here at the Droitwich base," Warman says, "it's been heavily involved servicing our London contracts."
