Who would have foreseen, 50 years ago, that future 15-metre lorries would have the performance of the sports cars that delighted young bloods in those days? This thought is prompted by the Hino HE 32-tonne tractive unit with Fuller nine-speed overdrive transmission which is claimed to have a maximum speed of about 72mph. • It reminds me of another HE — a delightful 1.8-litre sports car built by Herbert Engineering at Reading until 1931. It was probably little, if any, faster than its modern Japanese namesake. At £700 it is an exclusive car in the mould of a small 3-litre Bentley but with the horseshoe radiator of the Bugatti.
