TRANSPORT Minister Norman Fowler announced a new code of practice for the recall of defective vehicles this week — and commercial vehicles do better than cars.
The code requires manufacturers to notify the Department of Transport and all registered owners when any specified type of vehicle needs to be recalled.
Whereas cars of over five years are excluded from the arrangements Mr Fowler told CM that no such limit will affect commercial vehicles.
The code, which follows 10 months of talks between the DTp and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is an issue on which there is no disagreement between the Government and the Opposition.
It also depends heavily upon the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre at Swansea for its success in notifying vehicle owners.
Letters will be sent out by ordinary mail first, and by recorded delivery if no response results.
Such letters sent so far have brought an 89 per cent response which is considerably better than that achieved in the USA.
