I MUST APPLAUD the responsible manner in which the Commercial Motor is covering the serious problem of fuel shortage and the need for every one of us to exert self-imposed disciplines to achieve the economies needed. The article in your June 22 issue on the benefits of road speed governing points out how easy it is to make these worthwhile economies.

As long ago as March 1972, you conducted road tests on the Kysor automatic radiator shutter and published an article entitled "Control temperature — reduce costs", when savings of 10 per cent and six per cent were obtained on Guy Big J chassis operated by Smiths of Maddison on long-haul and local shunting respectively. It is interesting to note that at that time fuel was 30p a gallon.

Unfortunately the impression the popular media give of the Government's policy on fuel conservation is that the private car sector is of primary import5nce.

I believe we must do all in our power to increase the awareness of the importance of fuel saving among the road haulage contractors who have a reputation for merely passing on increases in operating costs to their customers.

They could do much to improve the economy of their fleet operation themselves with retrofit devices, and by bringing pressure to bear on the vehicle manufacturers to incorporate such worthwhile devices as standard equipment where this is feasible.

There are sizeable economies to be made in the other industrial sectors where the efficiency of work vehicles and stationary plant could be likewise improved.
