CM was able to get a brief driving impression of the new Fiat by taking a laden 35 FS van around the AP test track. Acceleration through the five gears was good and the ratios in the ZF gearbox being nicely spaced. There was surprisingly little body roll when cornering and the precise rack and pinion steering contributed to the feeling of stability.
Part of the nearside mirror was obscured by the quarterlight rear pillar but Fiat say this has been corrected on production models.
An unusual feature is the integral head restraint for the driver — a standard fitment, as is the nearside sliding door, fitted with an ingenious device for holding it open. The rear doors hinge to 270° to give maximum access.
We hope to test the Daily more fully on our light van test route later this year. The price is to be announced next week.
