Winter's cost

THE HARGREAVES Group reports profits before tax and extraordinary items for the year ended March 31 at £3,474,000 — marginally more than in the previous 12 months. Bad weather and strikes are blamed. Tax amounted to £540,000.

Says the chairman, David A. E. R. Peake. "This combination of factors cost our wholly owned companies well in excess of £500,000."

"Hargreaves Transport Ltd, trading under the name of Smith & Robinson, had excellent prospects, before the road haulage strike intervened, causing losses in January that depressed the outcome to little better than average. There was no dispute between employees and management within the company and the damage was entirely attributable to external factors," he said.

Hargreaves Transport has depots in Yorkshire, Lancashire, London, Cleveland, Humberside and South Wales.

Better year
