lE FREIGHT Transport ;ociation has come out in )osition to proposals from Department of Transport increase the range of tic es which must have in) height markings.
Jnder the DTp proposals, regulations will be applied a much greater range of lie es than at present and will extend to loads ich have so far been conend to be outside the scope :he regulations.
'TA says that the types of licEes included in the cur rent Construction and Use Regulations as needing the height marks were included after statistical evidence of the types of vehicles involved in accidents had been examined.
And FTA had always understood that this basis would be used in formulating the Special Type requirements and now it says that it can see no justification for extending the rules.
It adds that some operations are already treated as special cases, with movements being subject to a wide range of controls. The earlier FTA call for amendment to allow special type vehicles to carry loads that were not abnormal to be carried with an abnormal load to avoid the use of an extra vehicle had also been repeated.
The need for these changes has been underlined by the current fuel shortages, says the FTA.
Now the FTA is to meet Department of Transport officials for discussions on the proposals and it hopes that the DTp will modify the proposals.
