Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WITNESSES representing large industrial organizations attended the )pening of a three-day public inquiry at Manchester on Monday to support an application for 12 new A vehicles by Sutton and Sons (St. Helens), Ltd. These were dual-purpose and could be used, for at traffic or be converted by the use 3f Portolite collapsible tanks (The ommercial Motor, May 18).

Mr. W. D. Broadbent, representing Rylands Bros., Ltd., Warrington, said :hey wanted the new units to carry wire and wire products. Suttons were moving shout 50 per cent. of their traffic, but :hey wanted the company to do more. Flat vehicles equipped with sheets and allets were required.

A transport officer of T.C.I. Dyestuffs, Ltd., Mr. J. F. Adams, said that, followng a succession of complaints, they had sad to take their Scottish traffic away rrom Suttons and find alternative arrangenents for movement. However, these were unsatisfactory and if available they would utilize the new vehicles.

The deputy manager of Suttons, Mr. L. G. Baker, said there was such a lemand on their existing fleet that it was mpossible to carry out their normal naintenance schedules. A B application was pending and would improve this iituation, should it be granted.

Rates for , flat traffic with the dualpurpose units would not be any lower than those charged for conventional vehicles, said the general manager, Mr. J. S. Derbyshire. Economies would be made because they, hoped the new units would be fully loaded every journey they made. They had abmit 40 per cent. light running with ordinary tankers.

Mr. J. Booth, objecting for the B.T.C., suggested that it was not the demand for tanker facilities which had prompted the application, but the facility to carry liquids in bulk at a particular price. Any reduction in rates meant that other A-licensed vehicles would be losing traffic.

The case is to be continued.
