MORE BIRMINGHAM INCREASES?

A WARNING that he could not 1-1. guarantee that a proposed fare application seeking extra revenue of more than £300,000 a year would be the fast, was given to Birmingham City Council. last week, by Aid. H. Walton, chairman of the transport committee. The council rejected a proposal that an independent inquiry be made into the workings of the transport department.

During the debate on the committee's report—which showed a surplus of £47,000 for the year—it was revealed that 36 of the 51 bus services were unremunerat ive.

COMPENSATION RULES PASSED

THE British Transport Commission Compensation (A mendmen t) Regulations, 1954, were approved by the House of Commons last week.

Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, said they had been 'agreed with the seven trade unions concerned and were fully retrospective. They covered not only those who were still in the Commission's employment or that of B.R.S. (Parcels), Ltd., but those who might have left their employment but were in it at the appropriate time. Full protection was given to those entitled to it.
