The Charges Against the Char-a-banesDriver.

Tire Editor, THE COMMERCIAL' MOTOR.

{1,739] Sir,—Therehas been an outcry in the Press recently, not only in the motor Press, but also in the daily Press, directed against ehars-k,banes and their

drivers. '

The complaints made against -the; drivers of thee' chars-k-bancs are that they • disregard the signals of private car drivers, obetruct the roadway; so that faster vehicles cannot pass, and, generally, behave as road hogs.

We read some of the daily papers, and practically all the motor -trade pa-pert, but we have not yet noticed a single instance where anyone has had a good word to say for char-a-banes drivers. [This letter was written and despatched before Motor Mac's, Ltd., could have had the opportunity to read the two

• editorial articles in the issue of Commercial A. lotor for June 22nd.—En.

Now, undoubtedly, it is a fact that on certain side roads the char-k-bancs may cause teiliporary inconvenience, particularly to nervous drivers, owing to the restricted width of the roads, but, so far as the drivers themselves are concerned, in the district where, probably, more chars:a-banes are encountered. than in any other, namely, around Bburneraouth, it has been a very marked experience of the undersigned, and one which :he has frequently commented upon, that the Bournemouth char-h-banes drivers are amongst the most considerate road users .whon1 he has encountered.

-Whether these drivers act in the exemplary manner in which they do in obedience to instructions: from headquarters, or whether they do it from their own natural instincts, is not known to the writer, but, judging from the general disinclination of employees nowadays to do as they are told, it seems fair to give the drivers of the chars--banes in the'Bourriemouth district credit for the consideration which other users el the road obtain from them.

It would be interesting to know whether there are certain-zones in the country where. different standards of behaviour exist amongst the char-a-banes drivers. —Yours faithfully, Bournemouth. MOTOR MAC'S, LTD., E. H. AnzdArae

The Editor, THE COMMERCIAL MOTOR.

[1,740] Sir,—I feel it due to you to back up your argument that the char-a-bancs owner is no fool. I . have as good a set of drivers as I could wish, hut I plan out the routes for the excursions so that.l.ean reasonably rely upon a schedule time being adhered to, Did I send the charsa-bancs over narrow, vehicle roads they would return at any time, and I would need a 50 per cent. biggei fleet to enable me to keep my engagements. Wide roads for me all the time.—Yours faithfully, • Crum.. OWNER.
