just over 12 months. However, West Midland

Deputy Traffic Commissioner Alan Rourlet has granted a new international licence to Erik, a company formed by Transline's former general manager Michael Dowen. Erik's transport manager, Lorraine Green, was formerly transport manager at Transline.

Transline previously had its licence revoked after manag

ing director Anthony Shaw admitted sending vehicles to the Continent when the company only held a national licence (CM 5-11 November 1998). Earlier in 1998 CM had reported that Shaw's previous company, JS Express, had been carrying for TNT Retail Express without a licence. Shaw insisted he was operating legally using someone else's licence; he was later granted a licence for the Transline vehicles.

In February 1999 TC David Dixon granted Transline a fresh licence for 12 vehicles and three trailers on the understanding that Anthony Shaw would have no involvement in the business: the directors were Shaw's wife Janet and daughter Kelly (CM 11-17 February 1999). Revoking that licence with immediate effect when Transline failed to appear at a Birmingham public inquiry, the DTC said he had information that the company had gone into voluntary liquidation in July.

Erik had applied for a licence for eight vehicles and two trailers, initially based at the same operating centre as Transline. The DTC was told that the company had since moved to the Crescent Works Industrial Park at Darlaston.

The DTC was satisfied about the company's financial standing after hearing financial evidence in private. Bourlet said he understood that Dowen had been transport manager of Transline, but Helen Bradin, for Erik, said he had been general manager—the transport manager had been Lorraine Green, who was now acting as Erik's transport manager. Neither had been directors of Transline.

The DTC said he was satisfied that none of the directors of Transline was serving as a director of Erik.
