Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Peter Lawton Mechanics at a Daf dealership dismantled an operator's only truck looking for a fault that didn't exist, says its driver.

CT Christian driver Colin Hill says the 8x4 85CF, bought at Daf dealer Ford and Slater in Peterborough, was taken into the dealer's workshop for no reason after he complained he couldn't steer at a standstill.

Instead of telling him that the 85CF isn't designed to "dry steer", the dealer set about dismantling the steering system searching for a solution, says Hill. He claims fitters replaced boxes and pumps twice and fitted new power steering system pipes. It's just a shame that they didn't realise what it was and ripped it apart before Daf could tell me what It was," he says.

Daf marketing director Tony Pain says the dealer was trying to take the complaint seriously rather than simply telling the operator the tipper wasn't designed to dry steer "We want to take customers' complaints seriously," he adds. 'That's why the steering was taken apart" Christian was supplied with a free demonstrator while the work was carried out free of charge, but Pain adds that perhaps Daf should have told Christian the 850F wasn't designed to dry steer and then offered to dismantle and examine the steering if Christian still wasn't satisfied.
