THE decision to set up Conurbation Trans' port Authorities should be welcomed, said Mr. D. McKenna, chairman and general manager of British Railways' Southern Region, this week.
Within the CTAs, he said in a paper to the Institute of Transport, "the transport needs of the area can be looked at as a whole, comprehensive plans can be made and financial needs assessed.
"In conurbations outside London public road transport is in many hands, partly municipal and partly private, and local authority boundaries are apt to cut right across any cohesive commuting area.
"Here, as in London, it is vital that machinery should exist to bring all these elements together," said Mr. McKenna.
