Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE Dunlop Maxaret anti-locking system provided better control than a sensing device, said Mr. K. Buckby, of York Trailer Co. Ltd., this week, but a type suitable for trailers was not yet available and the cost could well be prohibitive.

Mr. Buckby, answering questions after a talk to the Transport Association in London on trailer braking and allied subjects, said the Maxaret responded to changes of dynamic load whereas load-sensing valves reacted to changes of static load and operation was influenced by variations in spring rate.

After stating in reply to another question that his company preferred palm brake couplings to the C type, Mr. Buckby emphasized that international hauliers would be well advised to fit palm couplings to facilitate tractive unit-trailer interchangeability. Use of the C type had been encouraged by SMMT.

In support of the commercial advantages of employing three-axle trailers, Mr. Buckby mentioned a series of tests that had given an average tyre mileage of well over 40,000, which was better than had been expected. In practice the extra tyre scrub, compared with the tyres of a tandem-axle bogie, would be more than compensated for by the increase in payload provided.

Thanking Mr. Buckby, Mr. David McVeigh, of McVeigh Transport, observed that it had "taken an act of Parliament to promote co-operation between the makers of tractive units and trailers".

Concern at Bill: Following its success in having the Leeds Corporation Bill amended to provide for consultation with interested parties before roads were closed to form pedestrian precincts, the TRTA is concerned to find that while similar new Bills to be promoted by Guildford and Portsmouth include such a provision, Manchester's does not, The TRTA has started negotiations on this.
