Products of 20 British Makers to Include Representative Examples of Light Van, Medium and Heavy-duty Goods Vehicle, and Passenger Chassis
AT the 33rd Brussels Show which opens to-morrow, Britain will, as last year, be strongly represented in the commercial
vehicle sect ion. Twenty British makers are due to exhibit. as against 16 American, 13 French, six German, three Makes each from Czechoslovakia and Belgium and one each from Italy, Holland and Switzerland. At the 1949 Show the only battery-electric vehicles exhibited were those shown by British makers, but this year the only representative of this class of vehicle will be the Austin. Electricar.
Foreign buyers will be given the opportunity of inspecting models ranging from light vans and medium-weight and heavy duty pods chassis, to passenger chassis, all representative of the best in design and workmanship which this country has to offer. Although this count...), now has to fight harder•fot its export orckrs, the latest available figures show encouraging rises, proof that Biitish-made vehicles can compete overseas in a buyers market The distributor in Belgium for vehicles made by A.E.C., Ltd., Southall, Middlesex, and the Maudslay Motor Co., Ltd., Castle Maudslay, Alcester, is Etablissements G. Spitals, 167, rue Tweemont, Deurne, Anvers. This concern will be showing an example of the latest type A.E.C. Regal Mark Ill single-decker chassis, with left-hand control, fitted with a bus body. The second A.E.C. exhibit will be a Matador four-wheeled .goods vehicle powered by the maker's 11.3-litre six-cylindered direct-injection oil engine, which has an output of 150 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m.
Jonckhcere, .Beveren-Roulers, coachbuilder, will be showing, a Regal Mark III chassis' on which will be mounted
what is termed a " mixed " body, presumably one which can be adapted to both bus and coach operation.
The first Maudslay Marathon Mark III chassis to be produced with a 17-ft. 7-in, wheelbase, will form the principal Maudslay exhibit of the same exhibitor. With left-hand controls, it will be seen with a superluxury Jonckheere body. A Marathon Mark HI left-hand-drive 20-ft.-wheelbase coach with Belgian coachwork, and a -Mustang twin-steer chassds, fitted with a Continental-type van body, will also be shown. These Maudslay models are powered by the A.E.C. 9.6-litre oil engine. A fourth machine, a Maudslay Marathon, with luxury-coach body, is to be shown on the stand to be occupied by Jonckheere.
The display by the Austin Motor CQ., Ltd., Longbridge Works, Birmingham, will comprise 10 vehicles, and these will be shown by the maker's Belgian agent, Sogida, 87, Rue de Page, Brussels. The 5-tanners will be a long-wheelbase drop-side truck and a shortwheelbase chassis and cab, whilst a tong-wheelbase 2-tonner will be shown with a drop-side body.
There wilt be two examples of A.70 chassis, One with a Countryman and the other with a pick-up body. The A.40 will also be shown in two forms, one chassis having a Countryman body, and the other a van body. A 25-cwt. three-way van, and au ambulance based on the same type of chassis, will complete the petrol-engined range of vehicles.
The only battery-electric vehicle to be shown will be the Morrison-Electricar, which is made by Austin Crornpton Parkinson Electric Vehicles, Ltd., Longbridge Works, Birmingham.
Six Commer models and a Karrier C.K.3 gully --erriptier will be displayed by Rootes (Belgique), S.A., 60, Rue Ravenstein, Shell Building, Brussels.
The Commer range will include the 8-cwt. Supervan, 25-cwt. Superpoise, 3and 4-ton long-wheelbase models, 7-tormer with underfloor engine and forward control, and an Avenger passenger chassis with a Belgian-built coach body. The manufacturers concerned are Commer Cars, Ltd.. and Kaiser Motors, Ltd., both of Luton. Beds.
D.B.T. (Sales), Ltd., Meltham, 14uddersfield, Yorks, will be showing four examples of the David Brown Cropmaster tractor, and a Trackmaster, the latter being a full-tracked agricultural tractor. The Cropmaster machines will include one oil-engined tractor, and three powered by paraffin-burning units.
The Trackmaster engine, which burns paraffin, develops a maximum of 35 b.h.p. at 2,300 r.p.m. and gives a drawbar pull of 7,500 lb. • A fifth Cropmaster model to be shown will be in sectioned form, and electrically driven to show the working of the engine parts, gears, etc. The Belgian agent for David Brown tractors and equipment is Ets. Fr. Vandenabeele, 15, Rue de la Campine, Brussels.
Etah Brondeel S.A., 94, Rue Joseph 11, Brussels, distributor for Dodge vehicles, will be showing two Dodge machines—models 103 and 125. Both are petrol-engined machines, the former having a 109 -b.h.p. engine, and the other a unit developing 114 b.h.p. Respective wheelbase-lengths are 9 ft. 11 ins., and 13 ft. 9 ins., and both have left-hand drive. The maker is Dodge Brothers (Britain), Ltd., Mortlake Road, Kew Gardens, Surrey.
Six Fordson machines, from a 5-cwt. • van to a 5-ton truck with Perkins oil engine, will be staged by the Ford Motor Co. (13elgiumS.A., Boit-e.Potal 37, Antwerp, Belgium. A 10-cwt. van,
a 2-ton van and a 10-cwt. estate car will figure amongst the vehicles to be shown.
Both the Fordson Thames oil-cngined 5-tanner and a Fordson Thames 4-tonner also to be shown have a wheelbase length of 13 ft. I in The vehieles were all built at Dagenham by the Ford Motor Co.. Ltd., Dagenham, Essex. The Perkins oil engine forms an alternative power unit in Fordson Thames models to the maker's standard 30 h.p. V8 petrol engine. This unit develops 85 b.h.p. at 3,500 r.p.m.
Three chassis and two complete passenger vehicles will form the exhibit of Guy Motors, Ltd., Fallings Park, Wolverhampton. Of the two Otter chassis to be shown, one will be for passenger bodies and is powered by a Gardner 6LW oil engine, and the other, a goods-vehicle chassis, has a Gardner 4LK unit. In both cases a two-speed axle is employed.
The Guy Arab 8-ft.-wide bus has a Gardner 6LW engin,e, fluid coupling and an air-operated Wilson gearbox It will be shown with coachwork by Hoot. The same bodybuilder is responsible for the body on the Guy Vixen bus to be shown. This will bc, a forward control, left hand -.drive machine. Both these passenger vehicles have been sold to operators in Antwerp. The third chassis to be exhibited will be a Guy. Arab with constant-mesh gearbox, and a specification conforming to the requirements of opera' tion in Holland.
Guy vehicles for Belgium are assembled in Holland. and distributed in Belgium by Willems Motors, Ltd., Rue dc l'Union 29, Eendrachtstraat. Antwerp.
Anciens Ets Pilette, 510, Chaussee de Louvain, Brussels, will be responsible for the exhibit of the Rover Co., Ltd., Birmingham. the vehicle to be shown being a standard model of the Land-Rover. The vehicle exhibits of Leyland Motors, Ltd., Leyland, Lanes, will comprise a Leyland Comet passenger chassis, a Comet goods chassis, and a Super Beaver truck chassis. Both the Comet chassis are powered by the maker's 5-litre 75 b.h.p. oil engine, whilst the unit in the Super Beaver is of 9.8-litre capacity and develops 125-130 b.h.p. at 1,800 r.p.m.
A hypoid-bevel rear axle is used on the passenger vehicle, the Comet goods chassis having a two-speed Eaton rear axle. This exhibit will be staged in conjunction with Brossel Freres, 14-20, Avenue de la Pede, Brussels, the Leyland 'agent in Belgium.
The bodywork of the MorrisCommercial and Morris vehicles to be exhibited will be of Belgian manufacture. and the distributor responsible for the display will be Ets P. Decrose, 96, Rue du Sceptre, Brussels. Six Morris-Commercial machines and two Morris vans will be included, the latter being the 5-cwt. and 10-cwt. models.
The Morris-Commercial range will comprise two oil-engined 5-tonners, a 25-30-cwt. van and a chassis, and an example of the 10-cwt. J-type van.
The Scarnmell exhibit will he made up of a Scarab mechanical-horse 6-ton tractive unit, a 15-ft. platform semitrailer, and a 22-ft. drop-frame semitrailer on 8.25 by 10 tyres. Executives of Scammell Lorries, Ltd., Watford, Flerts, will be in attendance on the stand during the Show. The Scammell distributor in Belgium is Fabricom, 13, Boulevard du Regent. Brussels. •
Two-speed Axles Seddon vehicles will be Shown by EtablissementS Hocke, 30, Rue Gaucheret, Brussels. . The exhibit will comprise three chassis and a passenger chassis complete with bus body. The chassis to be shown will be a Mark 559 tractor, a Mark 5LH .6-tonner, and a Mark 4 passenger chassis. All the Seddon goods chassis are available with Iwo-speed axles. The maker is Seddon Motors, Ltd., Oldham. Lancs.
The Standard Motor Co., Ltd., Fletcharnstead Works, Coventry, will he represented by two models, one ,a 12-cwt. van and the ()flier a pick-up body on a similar chassis. The Standard distributor in Belgium it Automobiles Imperia SA., Nessonvaux Les Liege..
Operators on the Continent will have the opportunity of examining for the first time the Thornycroft• Sturdy' Star, designed for a 51-ton payload. • In many ways conforming to the Thornycroft Trident, which is also to be shown, the Sturdy Star has a live-speed gearbox with an overdrive top gear. The payload capacity of the Trident is 712-8. tons.
A New Passenger Chassis The combined Titling-Stevens and Vulcan exhibit will comprise a TillingStevens K6.M A9 passenger chassis and two Vulcan chassis—a Model 9.PFA tractor and a PPF/1, the first of a new range of Vulcan pasSenger chassis, which is described on page 649.
The Tilling-Stevens passenger chassis, which is powered by a Meadows sixcylindered oil engine, has a wheelbase of 19 ft. 6 ins_ The standard specification of the Vulcan 9.PFA goods chassis includes an Eaton two-speed axle, but the model to be shown, will not be so equipped.. The vehicle makers are Tilling-Stevens, .Ltd.,: and Vulcan Motors, Ltd.. both of Victoria Works. Maidstone. Both makes arc distributed in Belgium by Le Grand Garage du Luxembourg, 3-5-7, Rut de Parnasse. Brussels.
Up to the time of going to press, no details had been received of the proposed Bedford exhibit which will be in the hands of General Motors, Ltd., rue Auguste Michiels. Anvers.
