nESPITE opposition from the Road Haulage Executive, the Northern Licensing Authority, Mr. S. W. Nelson, at a recent sitting at Newcastle-on-Tyne, granted an application by Marsden Warehouses. Ltd., Ushaw Moor, for the transfer to the company of licences granted to Messrs. W. and W. E. Neesham, in respect of three vehicles bought by Marsden Warehouses. Ltd., from Neesham's.
Mr. A. W. Schindler, accountant for the No. 2 Group of the Road Haulage Executive, and formerly secretary of Tyne Ferries and White Star Transport, Ltd., stated that Mr. J. C. Mark (a director of Marsden Warehouses, Ltd.) was formerly manager of the Tyne Ferries Co., Ltd., .bilt had left in August, 1948. Since then the business of Tyne Ferries had dropPed considerably.
Mr. J. A. T. Hanlon, for the R.H.E., alleged that Mr. Mark had abstracted the customers of Tyne Ferries to the extent of £300 per annum, It was
stated that 12 months ago Tyne Ferries had been voluntarily transferred to the R.H.E.
Mr. T. C. Wardlaw, for the applicant, suggested that many people might have withdrawn their business from Tyne Ferries because they did not approve of nationalization. Mr. Schindler replied that in his opinion the loss of business was because of the activities of Mr, Mark.
Granting the application, Mr. Nelson said that the circumstances of the business had changed, but not since May last year, when the original licence in respect of the vehicles had been granted to Messrs, Neesham.
The R.H.E. should have objected to the granting of the licence when notice of the application had been given in the " Applications and Decisions." Mr. Schindler stated: "At our low level, we never get a copy of'Applications and Decisions.' We are directed by those who do, and it was never pointed out to us."
