FACING an estimated deficit of £316,000 on the operation of the transport undertaking by March, 1951, Manchester City Council has nevertheless turned down a scheme for advertisements to be displayed on its publicservice vehicles, said to be capable of earning £30,000 a year, and is to press the Minister of Transport to grant to the full its application for higher fares.
The amendment rejecting commercial advertising was carried by 53 votes to 51. The chairman of the transport committee, Court. H. Sharp, blamed the Ministry of Transport for the under taking's difficulties. He said that the Ministry's refusal to grant in full an application to raise fares would account for a big deficit on estimated income.
The Minister has been asked to receive a deputation from the council, which will ask for the present 3d. fare to be put up to 4d. This revision was not granted in the previous application.
