Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN unusual type of low-loading, detachable semi-trailer has recently been supplied to Messrs. Henry Osman of Southampton, by Taskers of Andover (1932), Ltd., Waterloo Iron Works, Andover, through the agency of York Garage, Christchurch. This vehicle is primarily designed for the transport of various types of excavator, concrete mixer, etc. It is capable of carrying loads up to 14 tons, at 20 m.p.h., under the ordinary regulations, and up to 18 tons, at 5 m.p.h., under the Authorization of Special Types Act. The towing unit is an E.R.F. type-C 16 tractor chassis having a wheelbase of 8 ft. 6 ins. and being fitted with 36-in. by 8-in. tyres.

The .complete vehicle is 33 ft. long and 7 ft. 6 ins, wide overall, the main loading well being 11 ft. 9 ins. by 7 ft. 1 in. and-having a loading height of 2 ft. 2 ins, A Tasker-type ramp is fitted to the tractor to enable the semi-trailer to be quickly detached and substituted by a normal-type semi-trailer fitted with hydraulic tipping gear.

Dunlop twin tyres of 29-in. by 8-in. dimensions are fitted to wheels in tandem formation on the trailing bogie, this bogie consisting of two full-width axles anchored to the eyes of twin springs which, in turn, are fitted to c48 pivoting brackets carried by a beam mounted across the frame.

All wheels on the trailing portion are fitted with 16-in. Bendix-Cowdrey brakes fully compensated and operated through a vacuum servo cylinder interconnected with the braking system on the tractor. Separate vacuum banks and valves operate the tractor and semi-trailer brakes, although both are interconnected with the driver's brake pedal. A multi-pull lever is mounted in the cab on the near side for the operation of the semi-trailer brakes for parking or emergency. The brakes are operated when detaching the units by means of a hand wheel mounted on the front of the trailing portion.

Special attention has been given to the lubrication of the various parts comprising the rear bogie and hrake gear, those components that are inaccessible being fitted with oil-less bushes. Brackets are welded to the sides and rear of the trailer to support the 12-ft.-long loading ramps. These brackets are designed to enable ramps to be removed or placed in position when loads with excessive side overhang are carried.

The licensing weight of the complete vehicle is 8 tons.
