• Thirteen former TNT employees who were sacked for going on strike have won more than £80,000 compensation at an industrial tribunal.
The 11 drivers and two warehousemen had lodged their claims for unfair dismissal against the advice of their union, the Transport & General Workers' Union. The highest individual award was more than £11,000 (CM 23-29 Jan).
More than 100 workers were dismissed from the company's Parcel Express depot in Cannock, Staffs in January last year following TNT's first strike since it set up in the UK 13 years ago.
The one-hour stoppage was held in support of shop steward Alf Cooke who had been dismissed for calling a mass meeting over new working schedules without company consent. TNT claimed the stoppage was unofficial and is expected to appeal against the compensation award.
Sacked driver Frank Dennis, who led the campaign for compensation, said that more than 50 sacked employees attended a mass meeting on 9 February.
The TGWU is supporting Cooke whose claim for unfair dismissal was due to be heard this week.
