• A group of 17 owner-drivers is suing aggregates giant ARC for allegedly not following an operating cost formula incorporated into their contracts.
The drivers have contracts for up to five years with ARC's aggregates division in the South West. Last Friday they took the 18-month dispute to Weymouth County Court.
The case was adjourned on a technicality; it will be reconvened on 30 April at Weymouth and on 1 May at Dorchester County Court. "The whole thing hinges on a misunderstanding on haulage rates and fuel prices being charged at various ARC sites in the South West," says ARC South West operations director David Sharman. The drivers' solicitor, Humphries Kirk, declined to comment.
