Cummins' Celect 14 and 10litre electronic fuel-injection engines: in the US there are more than 40,000 vehicles already operating with its low emission engines rated at below 7 NOx, Europe's target on emissions for 1995.
In the UK neither Seddon Atkinson, ERF nor Foden are yet committed to taking either engine, but in the event they may have little choice.
Iveco's 80E21 Euro Cargo is the most powerful 7.5-tonner to date, offering about 21kW (28hp)/tonne. We are unlikely to see it as a solo chassis in the UK, but the engine will be used to power a lightweight tractive unit rated at 18 tonnes GVW.
