• US engine manufacturer Detroit Diesel says it will publish the results of UK trials on its four-stroke Series-60 engine by next summer.
The engines — an 11.1-litre version at 242kW (325hp) and a 12.7-litre model at 261kW (350hp) — were retrofitted to two operators' trucks in the autumn.
The Northampton-based Detroit Diesel Overseas Corporation will not name the hauliers or say what trucks the engines have been fitted into. The company's Series-60 engine was launched in the US in 1987. It now sells 17,000 a year and is an option on all US marques except Mack says Roger Rice, Detroit's UK area manager. Rice says that Perkins' TX is likely to be the engine's main UK competitor.
DDOC recently announced that it was fitting the Series-60 in Czech-built Liaz tractive units — a move which was seen as its first real step back into the European truck market (CM 25-31 October).
