CHUNNEL WORK • Hauliers are to be given an extra opportunity to move some of the bulk materials used in building the channel tunnel.

The Government has accepted an amendment from the select committee considering the Channel Tunnel Bill to allow bulk materials to be moved along the M20.

The select committee said it was anxious that as much material as possible should be moved by rail. Euro-Tunnel has now suggested that a railhead should be built relatively close to the terminal and should have immediate access to the M20.

This would enable lorries to complete the transport of bulk materials to the working sites by using the motorway, rather than ordinary roads.

NEW MAA GROUP • A new trade association, set up under the auspices of the Motor Agents Association (MAA) to meet the needs of over 20,0(X) petrol retailers, was launched last week.

The Petrol Retailers Association aims to be an organisation "of petrol retailers for petrol retailers" and Associa

tion director Bruce Petter says: "We want to support our members in trying to obtain a proper return on their money and investment."

The principle objective of the association is to promote the interests of the single operator to the government, the oil companies, consumer groups and the general public.

"We will achieve improved standards," says association president John Lowe, "by representing the interests of petrol retailers on issues such as Sunday trading, unleaded fuel, self-certification of pumps and fair trading. We do not seek to confront the oil companies but rather co-operate with them on issues of realistic margins, licence terms and fuel control. For more details contact the MM.
