LONDON'S experiment will electric vehicles is making "ver encouraging" progress with th gap between these and conven tional vehicles steadily nar rowing, according to th Greater London Council.
A report at the halfway stag of the six year London Goe Electric project says: "Pre liminary results have shown thz electric vehicles are performin. satisfactorily and that reliabilit has consistently improved as e), perience with the vehicles ha increased."
With this project, the Depar merit of Industry paid the cli. ference in initial cost betwee the 62 more expensive electri vehicles and conventional ones.
The experiment is being mon tored and the data collected b the GLC, with the results bein analysed by the Transport an Road Research Laboratory.
Twenty-seven conventione vehicles are also being mon tored to allow analysis of Gorr parable running and mainter ance costs.
The 62 electric vehicles — i the 30cwt to two-ton range came into service gradually an have so far recorded aroun 40,000 miles.
When the experiment ends i 1983, the GLC estimates the over a million miles will hay been logged.
