Drill grinder

Major design changes made to the range of Mk. IV drill grinders produced by Z. Brierley Ltd., include a quick-release workhead lock. The workhead, once removed, can be replaced by a different workhead and the sys tem also enables the drill-grinding workhead to be raised to permit spiral-type points to be ground on normal twist drills. Pre-loaded crossed-roller bearings, mounted in V guides, are fitted to the compound table to give rigidity to the slides and to promote sensitivity.

A new fine-feed micrometer head affords accurate sizing of the drills, while rapid movement of the top slide is controlled by a lever-cable mechanism that acts as a friction clutch when the table abuts against a pre-set stop. The end bearing is a new self-aligning spherical rod-type.

The chuck spindle is housed in a Rotolin reciprocating ball-bearing assembly that restricts the total deflection at the nose of the chuck to 0.0002in. Either ball or needle bearings of the sealed type are used throughout.

Battery-driven pump Following the introduction by Drum Engineering of a new L13,65 pump which has extremely low horse power requirements, the company has applied this to 24V d.c. motor drive.

The unit is now available from Drum complete with 24V, d.c. motor, toothed-belt drive and pulleys, all mounted on a light, fabricated steel bedplate.

It achieves 60 g.p.m. when pumping through normal valves, air eliminator meter and 120ft of liin.-bore hose, with a power consumption of only 2.75 b.h.p. (1 Hemp), while handling such products as gas oil.

A unique feature is the reliefvalve which enables the pump to work right up to relief pressure, but when the nozzle is closed and the pump goes into bypass, the pressure drops by 20 p.s.i. thereby considerably reducing the drain on the vehicle batteries.

This feature eliminates the problem of burst hoses or damage to meters and enables the higher outputs to be used with safety. The unit is extremely quiet in operation, making it eminently suitable for night deliveries.

The use of the 24V d.c. system has the advantage of less fuel consumption, reduced engine wear and the ability of mounting in the most convenient position. Made by: Drum Engineering Co. Ltd., Edward Street Works, Dudley Hill, Bradford 4.

Office machine The Remington Rand Division, Sperry Rand Ltd. announces a new product in its range of office machines which is known as the Remington EDC 111 electronic desk calculator. It features 220 digit capacity in an advanced solid-state electronic system which provides instant answers to virtually every type of mathematical calculation.

Self-contained, integrated silicon chip circuits, of the type used in computers and missile and aircraft guidance systems, enable the Remington EDC 111 to perform the most complicated

calculations instantly and silently, the only moving parts being the keys. These microminiaturized circuits, scarcely the size of a pin head, are capable of making decisions in five-billionths of a second and contain the equivalent of up to 220 components, resistors. diodes and transistors.

The specially designed 11-key keyboard and controls respond to a light touch and answers are immediately and clearly visible in the read-out display. A stor-in key permits any number appearing in the display to be placed in storage ready for instant recall when required.

The machine will perform (1) addition, subtractions, multiplication and division; (2) individual totals and accumulated total; (3) 111■1111 division with a constant; (4) division with accumulated quotients; (5) negative multiplication; (6) multiplication with a constant; (7) continuous multiplication; (8) automatic credit balance; 191 decimal system fixed 0-10.

It measures 17iin. long, 14in. wide and 7in. high and weighs 181b.

Made by: Remington Rand Division, Sperry Rand Ltd., 65 Holborn Viaduct, London, EC1. Price: £450.

Safety unit A dust-proof and weatherproof casing containing pressure and vacuum gauges, together with a tachometer for measuring pump, compressor or blower speed has been introduced by Drum Engineering. At any time during the off-loading operation pump speed, suction-line depression and delivery-line pressure can be seen at a glance. The operator can adjust the speed of discharge to suit the liquid and/or powder

being handled, e.g. in the case of heavy viscosity liquids such as molasses, the pump speed has to be reduced considerably to give effective pumping operation. Low-viscosity liquids demand that the pump be run at a much faster speed.

Drum has designed this unitto be accommodated on any existing road tanker; it is simple to fix and maintenance free. Power needs are 30 milliamps at 24V.

The safety unit is supplied complete with tacho lead, sensing probe and an annularring split across the axis for easy fitting to any rotating shaft, for instance, shaft, pump shaft. etc. The bracket to hold the probe in position is also enclosed, but may have to be modified to suit an individual application.

Safety code

Two manuals just published by the British Association for Commercial and Industrial Education will be found extremely useful to firms wishing to develop the supervisory and management potential of their staff.

A Training Officer's Guide to Discussion Leading, by A. I. S. Debenham, distils the author's four years' experience in leading BACIE's five-day course Techniques of Instruction.

Many participants in discussion groups are knowledgeable people with. years of practical experience. Mr Debenham contrasts the benefits of group participation in discussion with straightforward lecturing methods. He feels that when the matter under consideration does not lend itself to a specific correct answer—which is often the reality with transport subjects —discussion which enables practical experience and insight to be shared is valuable. His guide book is full of practical hints designed to make the most effective use of time spent on a training session. It should prove of great benefit in many quarters.

Report Writing by Mr. P. J. C. Perry, first published in 1961, is a best seller, 45,000 copies having been sold. The new, revised, edition is amusingly illustrated. The text deals practically with methods of marshalling facts and ideas coherently. It is not a guide to business letter writing —on which BACIE publishes another specialist booklet.

Accuracy, brevity and clarity, says Report Writing are not easily mastered. "Hard writing makes easy reading." This useful booklet can be read with profit by all who need to put their ideas on paper in succinct, readable form.

A Training Officer's Guide to Discussion Leading costs 12s 6d; Report Writing, costs 65. Both manuals are obtainable from BACIE. 16 Park Crescent, Regent's Park, London, W.1.

Disposable sling

Alberton Ltd. has produced an advanced design of low-cost, disposable sling for the bulk handling of export cargoes.

The company is one of Britain's leading weavers of webbing for car seat belts and industrial slings. Appreciating the need for a sling which could be thrown away when cargoes reached theirdestinations overseas, Alberton produced prototype slings of the required strength and lateral stability which can be sold at prices which make their use profitable for even the most competitive cargoes. Although intended for one trip only, their cost is so low that it is easily offset by substantial savings in handling charges.

Battery tug

From Kelvin Engineering comes the Mk. 2 battery-electric tug. Designated model T40, it can tow 2 tons gross over any hard surface, and up gradients of 1 in 10. Being only 37in. long by 32in. wide with 90deg of steering lock, there are few places that it cannot negotiate with ease.

The driver's platform is 7in. above the ground, and he con trots the machine with a springloaded handle incorporating a horn button, key-operated master switch and butterfly-type controls. Two speeds forward and reverse are provided, and the drive is taken up through an automatic clutch which gives smooth jerk-free control. The clutch also acts as a safety device as it is impossible to stall the motor under any conditions of overload.

Dynamic electrical braking is built into the circuit, which is fully isolated and fuse protected. Mechanical braking is controlled by the tiller arm, with the brake drum built into the drive wheel.

The 10in. by 4in. drive wheel has a diamond pattern tread for added traction, and 10in. by 3in. solid rubber rear wheels assist the machine to negotiate uneven surfaces. Alternative batteries give 141 or 162 Ah capacity; the two 12V. units can be changed in 2min.

A guard rail protects the driver's back and the standard towing hitch has three positions suiting most trailers.

The machine has a maximum speed of 4 mph and a drawbar pull of 500Ib.

Scrubbing brush

A scrubbing brush of Scotchbrite low-density abrasive material for use with a long handle is being introduced by the 3M Company.

Designed specifically for cleaning most types of floor surfaces where it is either impossible or impractical to use a rotary floor machine, the Scotchbrite Balai, as it is known, is available with two grades of Scotchbrite material. The scrubbing grade is for regular maintenance cleaning, and the stripping grade for removing the more stubborn marks.

The new brush is suitable for all types of cleaning including vertical surfaces.

A feature of the design is that the Scotchbrite material fans-out at the sides and thus prevents the metal head from scratching adjacent walls and equipment. Scotchbrite material will not rust or clog, and is easy to wash out. As the material is fully impregnated with abrasive particles, it retains its qualities throughout its life. The head is approximately 9÷in. long by 1-bin. wide.

The manufacturer claims that the brush has a long life, and that tests have shown it to have superior cleaning strength to conventional bristle brushes and deck scrubbers.

It is recommended that for best results the brush should be used in warm or hot water, depending on conditions, with a mild detergent. To prepare for use, the brush should be soaked until saturated, and then the -excess water allowed to drain off. Made by: 3M Company, 3M House, VVigmore Street, London W1.

Space heater

A medium-sized heater, model B-140, 'has been introduced to the Master range of portable oil fired forced draught space heaters marketed by W. C. Youngman Ltd. It has an output of 140,000 Btu/hr, (41kW), and an air flow of 500 cfm. It replaces theformer 120,000 Btu/hr model, and has been designed to meet a demand for a heater having a performance suitable for most industrial and agricultural duties, while retaining the advantages of instant operation, economical running and low maintenance costs attributed to smaller models.

One of the most important features of the 8-140 is the use of a low-pressure air-aspirated burner. This enables the heater to be switched on and off as required, without the need for purging and cooling controls required by conventional highpressure systems. This type of heater has distinct safety advantages, as the maximum pressure of 5 lb./sq. in. affects only the air supply and, unlike systems requiring a fuel pressure of 100/120 lb./sq. in., cannot release fuel into the atmosphere in the event of a pipe fracture or loose union. It may, therefore, be operated without attendance in complete confidence. In addition, savings of up to 40 per cent in maintenan e are • claimed when compared with high-pressure burners.

The combustion chamber is of stainless steel construction and incorporates an after-burner in the heated air outlet. A coolingcowl has been fitted around the combustion chamber to prevent the transfer of heat to the steel outer-casing. This casing has a removable top providing im mediate access to all working parts, the entire unit being mounted, with its fuel tank, upon two solid rubber-tyred wheels for ease of movement.

The heater is driven by a fractional hp electric motor which drives the fan and fuel deliverysystem. This latter comprises a small rotary air-compressor which lifts the fuel from the tank by syphon action, delivering an air/fuel mixture to the burner head at a pressure of 5 lb./sq. in. A proportion of the air supplied by the fan is directed through the combustion chamber, while the remainder is heated as it passes over the chamber within the cowling. Ignition is by constantly arcing electrodes supplied with current from a 10,000 volt heavy-duty transformer.

The Master 13-140 has a fuel consumption of 0,89 gal/hr. It is lifted with a 10.8gal capacity fuel :tank providing approximately 12 hours continuous operation. It is suitable for use on single-phase supply at either 110 or 230V. Its overall dimensions are 42in. long by 19 lin. wide by 24in. high. Weight without fuel is 90Ib. Made by: W. E. Youngman Ltd., Manor Royal. Crawley, Sussex.

Chassis cleaner

The underside is generally the dirtiest part of a vehicle and road dirt, mud and salt splashed up to the chassis is often left undisturbed for long periods to work away, unseen, accelerating metal corrosion. The results are a nightmare prospect for the transport manager or engineer made even more so by today's stricter regulations on standards of roadworthiness. Manual cleaning of undersides is expensive, time consuming and inefficient

and Dawson Bros. Ltd., the industrial cleaning specialist, has introduced a low-cost washer designed to remove "hidden dirtfrom the chassis of vehicles including buses, coaches, trucks or vans.

Regular cleaning of undersides is achieved cheaply and easily with the Dawson Minor chassis washing machine. It fits compactly into the service lane and the vehicle is driven slowly forward while highpressure jets flush away dirt. Regular washing enables cheaper maintenance and servicing. Veeshaped wheel guides ensure the vehicle is correctly aligned as it is driven through the machine.

This chassis cleaner comes complete with pump unit, under/ over weiring system, filter plates, penstock drain-valve and covers for the underfloor tank. The pump unit is connected to a jet pipe which extends the full width of the vehicle, with an overlap to ensure comprehensive coverage of the whole underside. The jetting falls back into the underfloor tank, and is thoroughly filtered before being drawn back into the pump, to prevent rejetting soil and loss of cleaning efficiency.

The plant is supplied as standard with manual switch-on/ switch-off. As an optional extra automatic stop/start equipment can be provided, operated by the vehicle. Another extra which can be provided is a rigid framework cover with translucent PVC sheeting to reduce splashout Marketed by: Staveley Machine Tools Ltd., Marketing Division, King Edward House, New Street, Birmingham 2.

Solenoid

An electrically operated fuel cutoff solenoid has been introduced by Tecalemit. This product has been designed to help commercial vehicle manufacturers and operators to comply with the antitheft regulations soon to be brought in by the Ministry of Transport.

The solenoid is a sealed unit designed for installation into the fuel line anywhere between the tank and the engine. It is suitable for both petrol and diesel fuel since it is fully insulated.

The Tecalemit fuel cut-off solenoid can be coupled to any key lock mechanism, but the company recommends that it should be operated by the steering-column lock to ensure maximum protection for the vehicle This arrangement prevents the vehicle from being moved or started and acts as a double safeguard against thefts.

The fuel cut-off unit is available to suit 6, 12 and 24V systems.

Made by: Tecalemit ;Engineering) Ltd., Filter Division, Maidenhead, Berks.

Electro arc welding

Protection for workers engaged in electric arc welding is the subject of a new series of safety. health and welfare booklets called Electric erc Welding, published recently by the Department of Employment and Productivity.

During electric arc welding the electrode and parts of the holder are live and hot so that shock or burns may result if touched. The arc also gives off infra-red radiation, high-intensity light, ultraviolet radiation and heat, while metal and fluxes give off fumes.

The object of the booklet, therefore, is to indicate how to avoid accidents and adverse effects of arc welding; one section is devoted to protective shields, screens and clothing.
