• Two single-deck chassis have helped new bus and coach registrations run ahead of last year's.
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) figures show 1,303 new vehicles had been registered by 31 July, up 2.7% on 1,269 in the first seven months of 1991. They show the impact the Dennis Dart and the Daf SB220 are having in the still depressed market.
London and Stagecoach orders for the Dart have helped Dennis close the gap behind market leader Volvo. Dennis's share has risen in a year from 20 to 28%, while Volvo's (including Leyland) has fallen from 49 to 36%; the delay in starting B6 midibus production is exaggerating the gap.
The Ikarus-bodied Daf SB220, imported from Hungary by Cowie group dealer Hughes Daf, is about the only large bus available from stock this year. Several have been supplied to operators with urgent fleet replacement or new contract requirements.
