• Ryder Truck Rental has acquired a majority of the assets of Portsmouth-based Mitchell Self Drive in a million pound-plus deal which will strengthen its presence in the south of England, and add a further 161 vehicles to its UK rental and leasing fleet.
According to Ryder Truck Rental director and financial controller Ken Taylor, the decision to acquire most of Mitchell's assets, including its fleet, which includes vans and tractive units, along with its base at Portsmouth Airport, was "one of synergy".
Taylor claims that MSD has a strong local reputation, and superior premises to Ryder's existing Portsmouth truck rental depot.
Ryder will merge its Portsmouth rental operation with Mitchell Self Drive, moving into Mitchell's premises. Both companies' vehicles will retain their own colours until MSD's fleet is replaced with new, Ryder-liveried vehicles.
Ryder's Vehicle Leasing & Services Division now owns more than 5,500 commercial vehicles in Great Britain and has a staff of over 700 at 42 locations.
