• Three local councils in Northumberland which have refused to contribute towards an annual subsidy of £46,000 to help maintain unremunerative bus services have been taken to task by the county council.
The authorities concerned—Berwick Corporation, Alnwick urban and Morpeth rural councils—have been accused by Lord Ridley, chairman of Northumberland county council, of adopting a "selfish and parochial outlook". They have been told that unless they pay their shares of the subsidy directly, the amounts will be deducted from any grants they are due to receive from the county council. • Busmen employed by GrimsbyCleethorpes Transport joint committee threatened to hold a mass meeting this week if a meeting between the committee and union representatives could not be arranged. The busmen are refusing to extend one-man operation to double-deck buses until they make some progress on their claim for an extra £1.50 a week which was turned down in June.
Two meetings were addressed by Mr Larry Smith, national bus secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union, on August 3, but the committee refused to attend or meet Mr Smith.
