• The Government should give the motor trade more support and the Press should be less critical, said Seddon's chairman and managing director, Mr H. Redmond, in Penrith on Tuesday. Mr Redmond was opening a new service depot for Scotts of Nottingham Ltd, Seddon and Atkinson group distributors.

Praising the facilities of the new depot, Mr Redmond said the motor industry was getting more than its fair share of criticism, while road transport was not only being limited by the unnecessary weight restriction of vehicles but also seemed to be the particular target of those attacking pollution and defending the environment.

The British commercial vehicle industry was second to none, said Mr Seddon, and its products could compete on comparable terms with any in the world, given a fair chance.

The new Penrith depot is within a mile of M6, situated in the town itself in a former railway building which has been converted and equipped to tackle heavy commercial vehicles. It will provide recovery and spares service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, plus out-of-hours workshop service in emergency cases. The workshop will be staffed by factory-trained men. This is the fourth of Scotts' truck service centres, and managing director Mr Peter Clarke stressed that it would opdate to the high standards of service on which his company had built its reputation.

The depot will handle all makes of vehicle, but will carry spares for Atkinson, Seddimi, Cununins and for some trailer makes. This depot has Taskers franchise; elsewhere Scotts have a York dealership.

Depot manager is Mr Ian Fowler, stores manager Mr C. Carter. Telephone number is Penrith 4341 and Telex is 64187.
