• The first production gas turbine engine to be built by Ford in the USA came off the assembly line on Tuesday August 10, at the company's new Ohio turbine plant.
First engines will be 450bhp 3600-series, to be followed by the 4200-series of 525bhp and then, later next year, the 320bhp 2500series models.
Ford stresses that no automotive applications are planned for the three series of engines until some time in the mid-1970s; initial output will be for industrial and marine applications.
The product of 19 years' research and development, including much road mileage in company trucks, the turbines have regenerative heat exchangers to promote fuel economy.
