• There was an unhappy ending this week CO the "birthday party" which lorry drivers employed by Tina Transport, of Terrington St Clement's, near King's Lynn, have recently been enjoying.
As reported in CM Ally 23, Mr Gordon Brown, the general manager, had negotiated, with TGWU district secretary Mr Alfred Avison, an agreement whereby seven drivers were to have fully-paid time off in lieu of birthdays.
On Tuesday Mr Brown closed his depot, saying that every one of the 12 clauses in the agreement had been broken by the men. He claimed that since he signed the document the drivers had been averaging take-home pay of £36 a week. They had since demanded travelling time, money for petrol, meals and lodging, as well as night subsistence. One driver, he said, had torn up his agreement, the shop steward had left, one man had refused to accept instructions and two more had been sent home to rest on full pay.
Mr Avison is reported to be investigating the matter, saying he thought Mr Brown was trying to terminate the agreement for his own ends.
