EVERAL municipalities and corn panics, apart from Lancashire aited Transport, Ltd., and South incashire Transport, Ltd., have oently applied for higher fares or are ranging to do so.

Proposals to abolish returns on rvices operating wholly within the )rough, and certain twoand foururney concessionary fares, have been proved by West Hartlepool Corpora311, who are faced with an estimated :ficit of £5,500 on the transport departent in the current year. A recornendation that all workmen's fareshich show a loss—should be increased as deferred for a period of six months. In an attempt to cut losses on the wn's bus services, Lancaster Transport

Committee—faced with a possible deficit of £14,000 this year—have made suggestions to the city council in which are included the proposed combination of some routes and the issue of return fares for all at any time of day.

Introducing the proposals, Cllr., T. S. Hayton said it was believed that the level had been reached where the public would walk rather than pay additional fares.

Sale of System Suggested There were those, he said, who advocated selling the undertaking to a company, but any commercial operator stayed in business only so long as he made a profit. Selling the undertaking, therefore, must involve reorganizing services to cut out unprofitable running, yet that was an amenity the corporation were expected to give.

The works services, alr. Hayton went on, were a complete loss, yet the corporation were bound to provide them. Because of them, 40 per cent, of the fleet brought in only 15 per cent, of revenue.

Oldham Town Council last week approved proposals to increase revenue by an estimated £45,000 by adding ld. to lid. on fares of 3d. and over.
