Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

UNTIL NOW Andrew Smith of Newton Trailers has specialised in tippers, but the dealership has just become the UK and Republic of Ireland agent for Kraker moving-floor trailers.

"Kraker is a family-run Dutch company that's about 20 years old and is one of the big three European manufacturers in its field," Smith reports. "It appeals to us because it's prepared to tailor its products to meet the needs of UK operators with an engineer's eye and a knowledge of what works elsewhere in Europe."

Newton Trailers, which is based eight miles from Luton Airport, took up the agency in January after becoming Fruehauf's agent for Wales, the Midlands, East Anglia and the South back in September. It no longer represents Stas.

However, the firm is still active in the used market too, and Smith is concerned about the future of the UK sugar beet industry: -I'm worried that less beet will be planted this year, and that's going to have an impact on tipper operators, who usually switch from bulk grain work to beet work in the winter."

That's likely to affect tipper sales, as will the significant number of tipper owners planning to get out of the industry. "Not a lot of young people are coming in to replace them either," he warns.

These factors could help depress UK sales of new tipper trailers to 800 or 900 units this year, he predicts: "But a lot of tipper owners are starting to work together in a loose coalition with maybe a transport manager helping them, and that gives some grounds for optimism."
