These are some of the 22 checklist questions included in the new free leaflet, called Danger! Transport at Work, produced by the Health and Safety Executive in an effort to crack down on transport related deaths.

The leaflet will be widely available from HSE offices as well as from public inquiry points based on the Library and Information Service, Broad Lane, Sheffield S3 7HQ. (phone 0742 78141 extensions 3113 and 3114).

A quarter of fatal accidents at work involve transport, amounting to more than 100 deaths each year, the leaflet points out.

And they are usually the result of poor management organisation, inadequately safe systems or work of insufficient training, information and instruction for drivers.

The leaflet is intended as a first step towards helping to increase awareness of the large transport safety problem, and how best to tackle it.

By law, everyone at work is responsible to ensure safety, it says.

Its issue also coincides with new inspection initiatives to be carried out by HM Factory, agricultural, and Mines and Quarries Inspectorates. These will involve in-depth investigations of transport arrangements during July to September of this year.

• A purge on West Midland firms which flout health and safety regulations has been promised by its chief inspector of factories, David Eves. He says the HSE remains committed to a rigorous campaign to ensure employers complied with the law.
