PLANS for more unsigned overnight parking controls in Leicestershire have been dropped after Freight Transport Association pressure, but Leicester city controls remain.
Leicestershire has now informally backed down on its plans for overnight parking bans throughout the whole county without any warning traffic signs.
The FTA petitioned the House of Commons over the extension of the system beyond Leicester city and has been informally told that the idea is being dropped.
But the system which has operated within the city's limits since March 1983 will remain. Much of the city has bans, but without signing.
If a street is mainly residential on both sides, overnight parking is an offence, Leicester's chief assistant traffic engineer, Alan Penfold, told CM.
Operators face costs of around £45 if they park in the wrong place and receive a warning windscreen sticker more than once, he said. But Leicester has not yet initiated any prosecutions, he added.
