THE new Alcan-bodied step-framed Schweppes urban delivery vehicle which made its public debut at the Crest Hotel Heathrow two weeks ago (CM March 301 has become the subject of some controversy.
Although it was displayed outside the hotel where the Brewery Transport Advisory Committee was holding its annual conference it was not part of the official conference display.
Indeed the vehicle's presence has angered BTAC members who earlier had been refused permission to display their vehicles because of lack of space.
Schweppes is not a BTAC member.
BTAC secretary Bill Montague said: "In fairness to all other manufacturers who paid leaflet display tables but who had been refused permission to show their vehicles because of space limitations, I would wish it to be known that neither the organising secretary nor the hotel conference manager were approached for permission to show this vehicle."
Tom Chavasse, managing director of Aican Transport Products said that he regrets that the new curtainsider's first display should have caused this controversy when the venue and timing was meant to save journeys and costs for those interested in its new design features.
