Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

noise report

• According to the April edition of Which? published yesterday, noise regulations are not being enforced. The survey on traffic noise which was carried out from January to March says all the sites looked at had noise levels which exceeded the Government recommended levels by at least 25 dBa during the day and 40 dBa during the night. The report states frankly that the surveyors chose their sites "because we knew they would be pretty noisy".

The sites were at Appleby on MI (population 1946); Wellington on A5 (17,154); Bridge on A2 (762) and the scene of much protest action recently; Westway, London, on A40 dual-carriageway; Mere on A303 (1920); Gisburn on A59 (414).

About 10 per cent of those interviewed said they were constantly disturbed by traffic noise while 20 per cent were disturbed for only part of the time.

The report urges stricter enforcement and the construction of by-passes at these and similar sites.
