WE deeply regret to record the sudden IT death on April 5 of Mr. Horace Bottomley, general manager of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., and managing director of W. C. Standerwick, Ltd., and Scout Motor Services, Ltd.

Two days, before his death, Mr. Bottomley, who was 61, had presided at the demonstration to the Press of the new Ribble' diner .coaches, and on the following evening he had appeared on television in a discussion of transport matters.

Forty-eight Years in Transport His career in the passenger transport industry opened in 1913 when he joined the office staff of Huddersfield Corporation Transport. After becoming secretary to the then general manager, he left in 1924 to join United Automobile Services, Ltd., at Darlington, serving as traffic superintendent and district manager in several parts of Yorkshire and Derbyshire over a period of five years.

After this he became assistant to the general manager of Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., being appointed general manager in 1944. During his service with that company their operations expanded threefold, and it was under his guiding hand that notable modernization schemes were completed and innovations introduced.

Mr. Bottomley, who was a member of the Institute of Transport, was created a C.B.E. in 1959.
