THIS is the space which The Commercial Motor had reserved, albeit 1 with considerable misgivings, in order to congratulate the Chancellor of the Exchequer upon finally acknowledging the justice of the repeated claims by the commercial vehicle industry, both passenger and goods, for fuel tax relief. It is space wasted, because he ignored the pleas; but he made exhortations about increasing exports and keeping down costs.
At least, it seemed, Mr. Lloyd`would remove the 10 per cent, surcharge imposed last July; this added another 3d. to the rate of taxation. So he' did. And with the next breath, "Selwyn the Indian Giver" said he intended that the tax on dery and petrol should be consolidated broadly at its present level, including surcharge. You still 'pay 2s, 9d. a gallon, but the tax collector will wear a different hat.
But then, if he had done anything, we would only have been tempted to drink his health with a modest tonic water—which went up by 15 per cent. anyway.
