aA Middlesex haulier was said to have been duped by an unqualified driver when she appeared before Eastern Traffic Commissioner Geoffrey Simms at a Cambridge disciplinary inquiry.

Carol Mullery, trading as Eagle Transport, of Pinner, had been fined £700 for failing to use a tachograph, using a vehicle without insurance and employing an unlicensed driver. She held an Operator's Licence for five vehicles.

Mullery said the convictions all arose out of the same incident. The driver concerned was a casual driver employed at the last minute when a regular driver's son fell ill. When he was asked to produce his driving licence he had said he would bring It in later.

Mullery said that she did not normally employ people on a one-off basis.

Asked why she had not replied to letters from the Traffic Area Office asking for details of the convictions, Mullery said she had not intentionally ignored the correspondence but she

had been in America for 11 weeks dealing with family matters.

She admitted that she had let persor considerations take over and had not pE as much attentil to business matte as she ought to.

matters as she ought to licences, Mulle said that two of them had been sold and tl third had not been used. Two replaceme vehicles had now been bought.

She agreed that no statutory SOF notice had been completed for the vehic that was not being used, though the tax N run out at the end of April. The other tv had not been used since the end February and the end of March when thE tax expired, but no SORN notices had be completed for those vehicles either.

Mullery said she would like to take II three specified vehicles off the licence ar put the two new ones on. She denied that reality it was her husband's business.

After financial evidence was heard in pi vete, the TC adjourned the hearing Mullery could produce accounts.
