• Anothel established haulier has decided to get out of the business. blaming poor rates.
The majority of Barrow-inFurness•based Ray Steele Haulage's nearly-new fleet is to be auctioned off later this month, after Steele decided he could not operate at the rates on offer. Steele, who built the business up from scratch over 22 years, principally hauled paper tissue for Scotts (owners of the Andrex brand). Steele says that after rival Kimberly-Clark took over the tissue firm the haulage rates were cut, and the work went to Williams Distribution.
"It's very sad to see it all come to nothing, but there's no point in working for nothing," he says.
A string of hauliers have recently decided to close rather than suffer reduced rates.
j Ray Steele's fleet, including more than 16 tractors and 70 trailers will be sold at the company's base on 21 September.
