Ward has been appointed West Midland area secretary. He takes over from J. T. Parnell who is retiring.
Mr Ward, 41, has been an executive officer in the area office for almost eight years. Before that he ran the family haulage business. He served Birmingham sub-area for four years as secretary before becoming its chairman and he was also a member of the national Vehicle Security Committee.
Two senior appointments have just been announced by own-account operator Quaker Oats Ltd. Robin Fassam has been promoted to distribution manager and will be responsible for the distribution of Quaker's grocery product range throughout the UK. He will also be responsible for directing t h e company's vehicle fleet operations.
Stephen Barrett takes up Mr Fassam's old job as managerdistribution operations. He will be responsible for establishing and maintaining the distribution system and will report to Mr Fassam.
The big passenger news this week is that Ian Buttress, the secretary and solicitor to Greater Manchester Transport, has been appointed president of 'the European Conference of British Bus and Coach Operators (ECBO).
ECBO was established in 1973 with the aim of representing the interests of the bus industry in relation to European affairs. The previous president was George Carruthers, NBC director of manpower, and the new vicepresident will be Ron Whittle, of J. T. Whittle & Son.
London Transport h a s announced two appointments: E. V. Bennett, 45, has been promoted to principal assistant (revenue budgets) in the .finance department, with responsibility for management accounting. Martin Whitley has been appointed principal programme planning assistant in the business planning department.
The trade and manufacturing front sees Athur Fogg named managing director for the Aycliffe Plant of Eaton's Axle Division, Europe. A former staff director at British Leyland Mr Fogg is succeeding Ronald Booth.
Scammell Motors announced the death after a short illness of Bill Smith on September 3. Mr Smith joined Scammell in 1930 as a learner at the age of 18 years and spent most of his working career with the company.
