Mr David Bowman, the new president of the NUR, said that the stage was set for a big battle between the Government, rail unions and British Rail in the next few months over "the chaotic transport policy which now exists."
Mr Bowman went on: "There'll be no cutting of the railways and if anyone attempts that course we'll use our full political and industrial strength if necessary to maintain that position."
