Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

speed up vehicle turn-round but what about the old question of delays at docks? My vehicles sperri literally hours travelling in the docks at Liverpool trying to discharge at various berths and endeavouring to pick the shortest queues. What can I do to cut out some of this wasted time?

AThere are two courses of action open to you in the case of Liverpool. both of which should help save you a considerable amount of the wasted time.

The first is to arrange to deliver your loads into the BRS export clearance depot at Great Howard Street. Liverpool, which is now open to other operators. The loads are sorted at the depot according to ship destinations and delivered by lorry load to the correct berth.

Increasing use of the facility may (or should) in due course reduce the queues at individual berths which will make life easier but in addition to this the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board operate a central control room where up-to-the-minute information on the state of ships loading and discharging and the number of vehicles waiting at each berth is constantly available.

To obtain this valuable information, you or your drivers should phone either 051-2369011/5 or ask the operator for "Freefone" 667. This is a free service available to anybody wanting immediate information on traffic in the docks. Inquiries can also be made by Telex —number 627013.
