Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Colin Sowman • Pirelli is road testing a drive axle truck tyre which is said to have 20% less rolling resistance than existing models and can cut fuel consumption by up to 2%.

The tyres won't be available before late 1996 as they have to undergo road tests and retreading trials before release.

Retreading may cause problems as Pirelli says up to 60% of the rolling resistance comes from the tread compound and pattern: retreading may cause a reversion to almost normal rolling resistance.

While Pirelli has its own retreading plant in Burton on Trent, it plans to set up deals with independent retreaders to supply tread and vet quality. If the independents come up to scratch operators using them will have their retreaded tyre guaranteed by Pirelli.

Multiple retreading is now possible on 80-profile tyres says Lucio Tota, Pirelli's deputy R&D director. But he warns that lowprofile tyres suffer more mechanical stress, which limits retreading.

Other changes in its lineup include the extension of the RH55 and TH65 range in 1996. The 80-profile 22.5in will be joined by 70 and 60-profile options; 70profile 19.51n and 75-profile 17.5in ranges will also be introduced.
